After winning their first 13 games in 2023 and 27 of their first 33, elbow injuries shelved three members of their stellar pitching rotation, including ace Shane McClanahan. The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to terms for the 2024 season with eight of their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including a unique deal for rehabbing ace Shane McClanahan. Sugar Shane has signed a two-year, incentive laden contract while he recovers from Tommy John surgery, which he elected to have on August 21 last year, that will pay a base salary of $3.6 million in 2024 and 2025, with escalators for games started this season, which would increase his 2025 salary by $120,000 for each start. These incentives would seem to indicate that McClanahan could be ready for return near the end of the 2024 season (i.e. playoffs).
