Isaac Collins hit his first career homer for Milwaukee, and Freddy Peralta pitched six innings of two-run ball. The Brewers improved to 3-5 on a season-long 10-game road trip. Chicago used an opener for the fourth consecutive game, tying Tampa Bay in September 2018 for the longest such streak in major league history, according to STATS.

Cubs smack four homers in rout of Pirates. Carson Kelly and Seiya Suzuki each homered as part of three-hit outings and the Chicago Cubs belted four overall during a 9-0 victory over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. The Cubs snapped a two-game skid while dealing the Pirates their third consecutive defeat and fifth shutout loss this season. Shota Imanaga (3-1) threw 87 pitches and gave up six hits over five-plus scoreless innings while striking out three and walking one to lead Chicago to its fourth shutout win of the season.

Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run homer and fell a single short of the cycle as the Chicago Cubs went deep four times in a 9-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Shota Imanaga (3-1) gave up six hits with three strikeouts in five scoreless innings before leaving with leg cramps after a leadoff double from Andrew McCutchen in the sixth. Having allowed the Miami Marlins to sneak away with a sweep-preventing 7-5 victory at Citizens Bank Park on April 20, the Phillies promptly hit the road and were swept by the first-place Mets, then blanked last Friday in the series opener in Chicago. “We kind of got exposed a little bit,” Trea Turner said Tuesday before a series opener against the Washington Nationals. Indeed the Phillies bounced back in Chicago, taking down the hot Cubs on Saturday and Sunday night.

Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo has been making the most of his latest big league opportunity, now as a member of the Atlanta Braves. Verdugo spent most of free agency with cricket-silent interest generated after the 28-year-old's one-year run with the New York Yankees. Minimal traction took off with the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates linked to Verdugo, which allowed the Braves to swoop in and take a flier on a one-year minor league contract with Verdugo. The Philadelphia Phillies have had an intriguing start to 2025, with a 15-13 record to their name, and they currently sit in second place in the National League East. Getting back some of their key players and building a really formidable pitching staff would likely help their chances, especially depending on how they utilize some players in the bullpen if it comes to that. While right now the discussion is a six-man rotation, evetually they could find one playing in relief if they need help there. Mets DFA veteran reliever after first appearance of the season. Just one day after making his New York Mets debut against the Washington Nationals, it appears the team is parting ways with veteran reliever José Ureña. On Tuesday, the Mets announced a flurry of transactions. Most notably, the team recalled reliever Kevin Herget from Triple-A Syracuse and designated Ureña for assignment. Ureña, 33, was called in for relief in Monday's blowout win against the Nationals.

Fatal flaw Atlanta Braves must address for 2025 MLB season. The Atlanta Braves may have finally found themselves after a disastrous 0-7 start to the season. Spencer Schwellenbach still has sparkling numbers but he is coming off of three straight uneven performances. Reigning Cy Young winner Chris Sale is finally showing signs of life behind Schwellenbach, but all told, Braves starters have only the 24th-best team ERA in the majors (4.48). Oh, and Spencer Strider is back on the IL.

Washington Nationals' Paul DeJong Ruled Out 2 Months Following Nose Surgery. Veteran infielder Paul DeJong, who got in in the face by a pitch on April 15, is unlikely to rejoin the Washington Nationals' lineup anytime soon. DeJong suffered a broken nose and a gash under his left eye as a result of the scary play against the Pittsburgh Pirates. It took a few weeks before the swelling went down, meaning he couldn't undergo sinus, orbital plate and nose surgery until Monday. As reported by USA Today's Bob Nightengale, DeJong won't be able to play again for at least two more months.

The operation was the result of taking a pitch to the face earlier this month. Through 28 games the Cardinals have a 12-16 record and are in fourth place in the National League Central behind the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Milwaukee Brewers. Chicago Cubs Top Prospect Starting To Rake in Minor Leagues After Rough Stretch. The Chicago Cubs made a controversial move earlier this month which may now be proving to have been the right call. After top prospect Matt Shaw made the Opening Day roster as the team's starting third baseman, the hopes to see him break onto the scene as a rookie from fans were high. During the first 18 games of his MLB career, Shaw had a slash line of .172/.294/.241 with one home run, three RBI and just 10 hits. When a rookie -- especially a high-profile one -- is struggling like this, it's always a debate as to whether to let him work things out in the Major Leagues or to send him back down and allow him to regain a rhythm.

Mets trade proposal moves $50 million two-time All-Star to Yankees. Well, anything is certainly possible, as both the Yankees and Mets have needs that could be addressed through a trade with each other. If the Yankees and Mets were to get together on a deal, the Yankees clearly need an infielder, and the Mets so happened to have one in the form of Jeff McNeil, who could be dealt. McNeil has been in trade rumors over the past few months.

New York Mets star Juan Soto is off to a solid start in his first season in Queens, but he is not lighting it up in his first year on the historic 15-year, $765 million contract that he signed in the offseason, and that start has been labeled disappointing by David Schoenfield of ESPN. San Diego Padres shortstop Mason McCoy injured his finger while diving into the bag as a pinch runner, adding yet another name to the ever-growing list of injuries the team has battled this year. McCoy was added to the roster after an injury to everyday infielder Luis Arraez. Guardians' Polarizing All-Star Trade Was Clearly the Right Move. The Cleveland Guardians made multiple trades during the MLB offseason, and most of them were not received all that well by the fan base. Given the fact that the Guardians have become widely known for being a rather frugal organization that doesn't always make significant strides to improve their roster, you can understand fan frustration. The Guardians sent Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays for intriguing outfield prospect Nick Mitchell and first baseman Spencer Horwitz, the latter of which was flipped to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal that brought pitcher Luis Ortiz to Cleveland.

Phillies are trade deadline fit for 453-save four-time All-Star, MLB writer claims. The Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen struggles so far this season have been discussed ad nauseam, but the good news is they still have three months to fix them. Jordan Romano hasn't worked out in the closer role, and José Alvarado, though he's five-for-five in save opportunities so far, has an uneven career track record. It would be no surprise to see the Phillies pursue a more experienced closer at the trade deadline. Last season, the Phillies nabbed closer Carlos Estévez from the Los Angeles Angels at the deadline, and the veteran righty was very good in Philadelphia--right up until he gave up the grand slam to Francisco Lindor that sunk the Phillies' postseason battleship.

WVU Product Ryan Bergert Pitches Clean Inning in Major League Debut. It has not been a straight path to the big leagues for right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert. The end of his career at West Virginia didn't go as he had hoped, with the 2020 season coming to a screeching halt due to the pandemic, and then in 2021, he underwent Tommy John surgery, which put him on the shelf for several months. Despite the unfortunate ending to his tenure in Morgantown, Bergert was still selected in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft. After three years and some change in the San Diego Padres' farm system, Bergert got the call-up to the show.

Cardinals Cutting Ties With Phenom For Now Down To Minors. The St. Louis Cardinals recently made a somewhat surprising decision to keep young infielder Thomas Saggese on the big league roster despite both Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman. The surprising part of that decision to keep him in St. Louis had nothing to do with his performance. The surprising part was that there wasn't going to be as much time to go around for him to have an everyday opportunity with Winn and Gorman now healthy. Atlanta will take that momentum into Denver against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. The Braves will send Bryce Elder (0-1, 5.57 ERA) against Colorado's Ryan Feltner (0-1, 3.86) in a matchup of right-handers. Nationals Notebook: Walk-off wins wowing Washington. Over 162 games, they will almost definitely post more wins than a Nats team that hasn't recorded a winning season since 2019. Sunday afternoon, Abrams scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning to give the Nats an 8-7 win after they trailed by six runs. Digesting the Division: The New York Mets (19-9) might not be getting great production from Juan Soto (.248 with 12 RBI), but Pete Alonso more than makes up for that with 26 RBI in 29 games. Philadelphia (15-13) got swept by the Mets this past week in an early-season barometer for both clubs.

Converted reliever Clay Holmes has been a key addition to the Mets' surprisingly effective rotation. The New York Mets' experiment with Clay Holmes is working swimmingly so far.
