Clubs looking for first base help, which include the Seattle Mariners, might have a hard time finding it. The Mariners are expected to be one of the most aggressive teams at the trade deadline and will be targeting corner infielders, according to various reports. Seattle ownership will allow president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto and the rest of the front office extra payroll to make necessary moves, but it seems like it will take a hefty trade package to land the better first basemen available.

Every ninth-inning plan the Phillies had coming into the season has been dashed. Free-agent signee Jordan Romano has been a disaster, and just as it looked like José Alvarado would be a suitable fill-in, the big lefty wound up with an 80-game suspension, plus postseason ineligibility, for a positive drug test. Clayton Kershaw is on the brink of a major milestone, needing just three strikeouts to reach 3,000 for his career. The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher is expected to achieve this feat Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium against the Chicago White Sox. A three-time Cy Young winner, Kershaw would become only the 20th pitcher in MLB history to hit that mark. At 37, Kershaw continues to impress despite declining velocity, showcasing his experience and determination. As baseball evolves, milestones like 3,000 strikeouts may become rarer, making Kershaw’s achievement a celebration of traditional pitching greatness.

James Wood (OF - WSH)

7/1/25 8:00 AM -
Nationals Star Rookie Matches Two Franchise Icons Over His First 162 Games. There haven't been very many bright sports for the Washington Nationals over the first several months of the 2025 season, but one of the few has been the blossoming of rookie outfielder James Wood into a bonafide star. After a solid showing over the second half of 2024, Wood has absolutely exploded over the first half of the new season. At just 22 years old, Wood has already become the new driving force for the Nationals at the plate, and he's also quickly becoming a hitter that even the most seasoned of pitchers have learned to fear. This was perfectly illustrated on Sunday evening against the Los Angeles Angels, as Wood became the first hitter since the legendary Barry Bonds to be intentionally walked four times in one ball game.

3 Keys For The Cardinals To Defeat Paul Skenes. The St. Louis Cardinals face a daunting challenge on Tuesday night against Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes. Skenes, armed with a triple-digit fastball and devastating slider, has been a nightmare for opposing lineups since he stepped foot on a Major League Baseball diamond. Skenes is phenomenal, but he's not unbeatable. St. Louis can have a successful night against the flamethrower, but the Cardinals will have to focus on three things.

Pirates' Legend Moves Up Another Franchise Leaderboard. PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Pirates all-time great Andrew McCutchen has had a season of broken records within the franchise. While his single in the bottom of the first inning against the Mets on June 28 didn't make any headlines, it helped McCutchen move up another leaderboard in Pirates' history. That single marked his 2,896 total base with the Pirates, moving him past Hall of Fame outfielder Lloyd Waner (1927-41) at 2,895 total bases for seventh spot in franchise history. Total bases measure how many bases a player gets per hit. A single is one base, a double is two bases, a triple is three bases and a home run is four bases. Is Zack Wheeler the best Phillies pitcher in 40 years?. On the surface, it might seem a little sacrilegious to think about Zack Wheeler being the best Phillies pitcher this century (basically since Steve Carlton left the team in 1985). There have been some incredible starting pitchers in the city over that span, from Curt Schilling's nine years in the 1990s, to Cole Hamels quietly putting together 10 of the most productive seasons in team history, to the longevity of Aaron Nola, to the dominance of Roy Halladay — a literal first ballot Hall of Famer — and the brilliance of Cliff Lee. Brewers Pitching Prospect Not Named Jacob Misiorowski 'Can Touch Triple Digits'. The Milwaukee Brewers have a scary amount of high-end pitching prospects, and one of their most exciting hurlers hasn't even reached Major League Baseball yet. The future is beyond bright for Milwaukee in that regard. Baseball media is all abuzz about Jacob Misiorowski at the moment (and deservedly so), but FanSided's Owen Jonas recently took the time to hype up another thrilling young arm in Milwaukee's pipeline. “The fact that each of the Brewers' current top three pitching prospects debuted within one year of each other speaks to the ridiculous amount of talent that is bursting onto the major league scene for the Crew,” Jonas wrote.

Rockies May Own Dubious Honor of Having Worst Contract in MLB on Their Payroll. It has been a long time since anything has gone right for the Colorado Rockies. Currently on pace to break the single-season record for losses, which was set last year by the Chicago White Sox with 121, the Rockies are going to miss the postseason for a seventh consecutive year. One of the biggest messes the team is working through is the free agent signing of Kris Bryant, who owns possibly the worst contract in baseball. Colorado signed the 2015 National League Rookie of the Year and 2016 NL MVP to a massive seven-year, $182 million contract ahead of the 2022 season.

Braves trade pitch brings them veteran workhorse to aid decimated rotation. Despite sitting 10.5 games back in the National League East and eight games back of the third Wild Card, the Atlanta Braves aren't the obvious sellers that their 38-45 record would indicate. With a roster stacked with former All-Stars, the Braves certainly have the talent to climb out of the hole they have dug themselves, especially with Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider back in the mix. Pending a total collapse in the next month, a soft buy may be an effective strategy for the Braves. This would mean that they wouldn't be in the mix for the trade deadline's best prizes, such as Jarren Duran or Seth Lugo, but instead look to fill out their roster with low-cost additions.

Cardinals Predicted To Trade Two Stars To Loaded Yankees. The St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees have long been connected to some blockbuster trade rumors over the last few months. With many expecting the Cardinals to sell this season, though this may change, their expiring pieces fit the Yankees very well. Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, Erick Fedde, and others would fit the Yankees very well. Zach Kaplan of Athlon Sports recently predicted the Cardinals would send Nolan Arenado and Helsley to the Bronx in a trade for Jasson Dominguez, Oswaldo Cabrera, Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, and $37 million in cash considerations for Arenado's contract.

Struggling Giants Reliever Not as Awful as His Numbers Suggest. The San Francisco Giants' bullpen has a real argument as the single best unit in all of baseball. Ryan Walker entered the season as one of the faces to the Giants' bullpen before anyone know how consistently dominant of a unit it would be. Walker, 29, has a 4.64 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 2025.

Rafael Devers Trade Has Been Surprising Bust For Both Red Sox & Giants. It's been two weeks since the Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for two pitchers and two prospects. The move made sense for both clubs at the time, as the Red Sox wanted to fortify their pitching staff and the Giants sought a big bat to bolster their lineup. Both teams have gone 4-8 in their first 12 games since the trade, dropping multiple games in the standings. Boston has lost seven of its last eight games as its offense has disappeared, averaging just 3.83 runs per game without Devers compared to 4.84 runs per game with him.
