4/21/25 2:00 PM - Chicago Cubs shouldn't overlook one player's incredibly slow start to 2025 season. Life is pretty easy for the Chicago Cubs' offense right now. The Cubs' four-hit effort against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday notwithstanding, the Cubs' offense has been carrying the team. Of course, the immediate reason for that success is Kyle Tucker. The arrival of Tucker provided instant confirmation of what the Cubs lacked last season--an impact bat that can hide other areas of deficiency on the roster.

It certainly is possible that the Marlins will move Alcantara before the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline on July 31, but as is normal operations for the first month of the regular season, impact trades usually aren't at the forefront of activity in April. The Dodgers, Padres and Diamondbacks — the three foes accounting for 20 of those 26 games — owned three of the five best winning percentages in the NL coming into Monday, with a combined .672 winning percentage. In other words, the early-season schedule hasn't been an easy one for the Cubs. “On paper, we knew this was going to be an April that presented challenges,” second baseman Nico Hoerner told the Sun-Times on Saturday. The Milwaukee Brewers will get a chance to visit an old pal when they open a four-game road series against Willy Adames and the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. The teams flew into San Francisco on Sunday night experiencing opposite emotions. While the Brewers were celebrating a 14-1 thumping of the Athletics to complete a series win and a 4-2 homestand, the Giants were lamenting having squandered a three-run, ninth-inning lead in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels that completed a 5-5 trip. Adames was a driving force in back-to-back National League Central titles by the Brewers in 2023 and 2024.

Tylor Megill (P - NYM)
4/21/25 4:25 AM - 'High energy' expected as Mets, Phillies open series. On Sunday afternoon, the New York Mets completed their first four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals since 1986. The historical comparisons will be of the far more recent variety for the Mets on Monday night, when they host the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game series. Tylor Megill (2-2, 1.40 ERA) is slated to start for the Mets against fellow right-hander Aaron Nola (0-4, 6.65). The Mets remained hot after Brandon Nimmo laced a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning of a 7-4 win over the Cardinals on Sunday, while the Phillies missed a chance to sweep the Miami Marlins when they squandered a three-run lead in a 7-5 loss in 10 innings.

The Mets are off to a hot start thanks to Pete Alonso and a surprisingly dominant pitching staff that leads the majors in ERA. While winning the National League East isn't necessarily a must to reach the postseason, the early depth in the NL West, with four potential playoff teams, does suggest the possibility that only one East team might make the playoffs -- which makes these head-to-head matchups even more important.

4/20/25 2:19 PM - Cardinals Need To Cut Ties With Struggling Relief Pitcher. The St. Louis Cardinals have seemingly waved the white flag for the 2025 season, but that's not entirely a bad thing. A rebuilding year is necessary for almost all teams in baseball, unless you're the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, or New York Yankees and can afford to dish out $1 billion in contracts in one offseason. For the Cardinals, the rebuilding year in 2025 is going to be used to build up the farm system, develop the young core, and build confidence throughout these young stars. This could result in the Cardinals trading away players like Erick Fedde and Ryan Helsey, both of which don't have a future in St. Louis beyond this season.

The Chicago Cubs were recently hit with a major blow when it was announced that southpaw Justin Steele would miss the rest of the 2025 season. Aidan Miller (SS - PHI)
4/20/25 5:31 AM - Phillies prospect Aidan Miller preparing, adjusting after slow start. Aidan Miller had a 26-game stretch last year from late May until early July when he endured his first professional slump. The Phillies' first-round pick in the 2023 draft batted only .149 with 27 strikeouts. After a stellar high school career in Florida and a good first pro season in rookie ball and low-A, Miller knew that moment was coming. The 20-year-old shortstop managed only three hits and struck out 13 times in his first 35 plate appearances for the Fightin Phils.

Pete Alonso (1B - NYM)
4/20/25 4:37 AM - Pete Alonso, Mets look to keep doing 'phenomenal job' vs. Cards. Pete Alonso is feeling as locked-in as he ever has as a professional, but he knows he's not the only reason for the New York Mets' fast start. The Mets will look to complete a sweep of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon when the teams close out a four-game series. Clay Holmes (2-1, 3.66 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mets against Sonny Gray (3-0, 3.13) in a battle of right-handers. Ryan Pressly (P - CHC)
4/20/25 4:17 AM - The Cubs trust circle of relievers is a revolving door. It has been such a roller coaster watching the Cubs bullpen try to cobble together the last 6-8 outs of a ballgame, and it feels like the "trusted" parties are not consistent either. A few bad games, they are outside the "circle of trust" among fans, and a few good games bring someone in. Over the first (domestic) week or so of the season, closer Ryan Pressly and veteran lefty Caleb Thielbar were nowhere near the circle of trust.

Paul Skenes (P - PIT)
4/20/25 4:00 AM - Going, going, gone! After Pirates' loss, giddy demand for Skenes' bobblehead morphs to frustration. Paul Skenes grew used to the buzz that surrounds him a while ago. Throughout an unseasonably warm spring afternoon, the mania that seems to follow the 22-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates ace whenever he takes the mound collided with the reality of the current state of his underperforming team. A day that began with fans queueing up outside the gates of PNC Park more than five hours before Skenes delivered his first pitch — all in the in hopes of securing one of the 20,000 bobbleheads inspired by the National League Rookie of the Year — ended with a 3-0 loss and the increasingly familiar chants urging owner Bob Nutting to sell the team. Due to what Pirates president Travis Williams called unprecedented demand, the team pledged to make sure that every one of the 37,113 who waited in lines that stretched for blocks in every direction — including across the Roberto Clemente Bridge into the city's downtown — would be able to obtain one of the popular collectibles.

Starling Marte (OF - NYM)
4/20/25 3:41 AM - Veteran Mets OF is still getting used to new role: 'It's uncomfortable, but not difficult'. For 13 seasons, Mets outfielder Starling Marte was one of baseball's most electric players. This season, he's taken a step back, embracing a diminished role that has him mostly DHing. While he's not carrying the everyday load of playing right field anymore, the Mets poached Juan Soto from the Yankees to do that, this new job has its own set of demands. Now, instead of being involved in every play, Marte is seeing action three, maybe four times, when he plays.

NEW YORK — In a couple of recent interviews marking Opening Day, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred candidly admitted that baseball is facing a “massive” disparity problem that became further illustrated last winter with the Mets’ $765 million investment on Juan Soto and the Dodgers’ shocking heavily deferred spending spree that merely widened the gap between the large and small market teams.
