Braves top Cards with five-run 8th. Michael Harris II drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and Sean Murphy followed with a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Atlanta Braves came from behind to beat the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 on Monday and extend their winning streak to four games. The five-run rally against reliever Phil Maton (0-1) started when Austin Riley beat out an infield single, which was originally called out but overturned after replay. Marcell Ozuna walked and Matt Olson tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to right, sending pinch runner Eli White to third.

Atlanta Braves' Austin Riley Scores Clutch Run, Face Plants Sliding Into Home. Austin Riley came through in the clutch on the basebaths Monday night, but he ultimately didn't get any style points for his efforts. The Atlanta Braves trailed the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the eighth when Riley chopped a grounder to short. Riley had advanced to second by the time Matt Olson stepped up to the plate. Olson notched a single of his own and Riley immediately set his sights on scoring.

Former Saginaw Heritage star Spencer Schwellenbach threw a quality start Monday, but the second-year right-hander was not around when the Atlanta Braves earned the win. Schwellenbach struck out five and did not walk a batter, completing seven innings in the Braves' 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. San Francisco Giants infielder Casey Schmitt has a Grade 2 left oblique strain and is expected to miss at least a month. Schmitt, injured in a batting cage during a weekend road series with the Los Angeles Angels that landed him on the 10-day injured list, is scheduled to be re-evaluated again at the end of this homestand this weekend. The 26-year-old Schmitt has played seven of his nine games at first base after changing positions this year.

Diamondbacks option Jake McCarthy to Triple-A Reno. The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned struggling outfielder Jake McCarthy to Triple-A Reno on Monday, according to the team's transactions list. McCarthy entered 2025 coming off his most complete season as a big leaguer, playing a career-high 142 games in 2024 with a batting line of .285/.349/.400 with eight home runs and 25 steals. It looked for a moment that McCarthy was on the upswing by breaking out of the hitless funk on April 9 against the Baltimore Orioles and then two games later delivering a game-tying single in a comeback win over the Milwaukee Brewers. It turns out they were not over, as McCarthy has gone 0-for-10 at the plate since that triumphant moment.

New York Mets reveal timeline on Jose Siri's injury. The New York Mets will be without one of their offseason acquisitions for the foreseeable future. On Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reported that outfielder Jose Siri will miss 8-10 weeks with a fractured left tibia, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns. A potential return for Siri this season with this injury could end up being mid-to-late June. Siri was acquired by the Mets during the offseason from the Tampa Bay Rays and suffered his gruesome left leg injury during his at-bat against the Athletics on April 12.

Chicago Cubs shouldn't overlook one player's incredibly slow start to 2025 season. Life is pretty easy for the Chicago Cubs' offense right now. The Cubs' four-hit effort against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday notwithstanding, the Cubs' offense has been carrying the team. Of course, the immediate reason for that success is Kyle Tucker. The arrival of Tucker provided instant confirmation of what the Cubs lacked last season--an impact bat that can hide other areas of deficiency on the roster.

Since sweeping their first series of the season, they have gone 6-13 and now sit four games out of first place in the National League Central. Masyn Winn is eligible to be activated off the Injured List on April 22nd after being placed on the Injured List due to back spasms. Justin Steele replacement may have just fallen into the Chicago Cubs lap. The Chicago Cubs won't be trading for Sandy Alcantara anytime soon. It certainly is possible that the Marlins will move Alcantara before the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline on July 31, but as is normal operations for the first month of the regular season, impact trades usually aren't at the forefront of activity in April. For now, the Cubs seem comfortable with Colin Rea taking Justin Steele's turn in the rotation, but it would seem likely that the front office is always looking for external reinforcements.

In other words, the early-season schedule hasn't been an easy one for the Cubs. “On paper, we knew this was going to be an April that presented challenges,” second baseman Nico Hoerner told the Sun-Times on Saturday. Yankees trade proposal ends biggest need by landing eight-time All-Star. At some point over the next few months, the New York Yankees will have to make a decision on Nolan Arenado. The team has shown interest in him over the past few months, and with Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza splitting time at third base, it isn't going to be in the Yankees' favor. Peraza and Cabrera are decent players, but to say they're anything close to Arenado would be utterly unfair to the Future Hall of Famer. With Peraza and Cabrera slowing down a bit over the past few weeks, Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media suggested that the Yankees trade for Arenado, adding that his hot start should intrigue them.

The Mets are off to a hot start thanks to Pete Alonso and a surprisingly dominant pitching staff that leads the majors in ERA. While winning the National League East isn't necessarily a must to reach the postseason, the early depth in the NL West, with four potential playoff teams, does suggest the possibility that only one East team might make the playoffs -- which makes these head-to-head matchups even more important.

Kerkering struggles as Phillies blow early lead, fail to sweep Marlins. The sun was shining, birthday festivities for the Phanatic were ongoing all afternoon, the offense was flowing early, Jesús Luzardo allowed one earned run in seven innings and it looked like the Phillies were on their way to their second series sweep of the season. Orion Kerkering entered the game with a two-run lead in the eighth inning and gave up singles to the first two batters he faced. It was the first home run of Sanoja's career and the first lead the Marlins saw in the weekend series at Citizens Bank Park. Pirates Get Great News on Infielder's Injury. The Pittsburgh Pirates may have one of their infielders back for their series finale vs. the Cleveland Guardians at PNC Park. The Pirates trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning and first baseman Enmanuel Valdez came up, facing Guardians All-Star closer in right-handed pitcher Emmanuel Clase. Valdez took a pitch off of Clase and hit it deep to center field, giving him extra bases. This caused him to take his right hand off the third base bag and Guardians All-Star third baseman José Ramírez tagged him.

The Cubs trust circle of relievers is a revolving door. It has been such a roller coaster watching the Cubs bullpen try to cobble together the last 6-8 outs of a ballgame, and it feels like the "trusted" parties are not consistent either. A few bad games, they are outside the "circle of trust" among fans, and a few good games bring someone in. Over the first (domestic) week or so of the season, closer Ryan Pressly and veteran lefty Caleb Thielbar were nowhere near the circle of trust.

Veteran Mets OF is still getting used to new role: 'It's uncomfortable, but not difficult'. For 13 seasons, Mets outfielder Starling Marte was one of baseball's most electric players. This season, he's taken a step back, embracing a diminished role that has him mostly DHing. While he's not carrying the everyday load of playing right field anymore, the Mets poached Juan Soto from the Yankees to do that, this new job has its own set of demands. Now, instead of being involved in every play, Marte is seeing action three, maybe four times, when he plays.

Wild game has both Phillies, Marlins taking positives into Sunday matchup. The Philadelphia Phillies are going for a sweep of the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon, but the final half-inning of Saturday's contest created an unexpected shift in momentum heading into the series finale.
