Phillies a +110 Underdog for Four-Game Series With Mets. Next up in the pre-playoff gauntlet for the Philadelphia Phillies is a four-game set with the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Mets are a -145 favorite to win the series at DraftKings Sportsbook, while the Phillies are a +110 series underdog. The Phils come into Queens with a 5-4 mark over their last nine road games. Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Co. just took two of three from the Mets at home last week and they have a 6-3 season record against the second-place team in the National League East.

Cardinals not expected to re-sign former MVP after disappointing season. The St. Louis Cardinals are inching closer to the verge of elimination. With 10 games remaining on the schedule, they are seven games back in the National League Wild Card race. Former NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt is a free agent at the end of the 2024 season and could be playing his final games in a Cardinals uniform this coming weekend. Mark Powell of FanSided listed the veteran slugger as somebody who is unlikely to return to the team in 2025.

The Atlanta Braves have been ravaged by injuries this season, but they could be getting star second baseman Ozzie Albies back soon, and reports indicate that the team expects him back on Friday against the Miami Marlins. “After going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk while playing for Triple-A Gwinnett in Jacksonville (Fla.) on Tuesday night, Albies went 2-for-5 with two singles on Wednesday,” according to MLB.com. “If all goes to plan, he will travel to Miami and rejoin Atlanta's lineup for Friday's series opener against the Marlins.” This is a big development for the Braves, who need every bit of help they can get.

Brewers Found Amusing Way to Involve Jackson Chourio in Clubhouse Celebration. After clinching the National League Central earlier Wednesday afternoon and walking off the Philadelphia Phillies later that same night, it was time for the Milwaukee Brewers to pop champagne bottles and celebrate. There was just one problem, though. Brewers rookie Jackson Chourio, who is 20 years old, could not partake in the adult beverages that his teammates were passing around in the clubhouse. But no matter; Chourio's teammates found a unique way to involve the rookie in the festivities. Milwaukee set up a baby stroller with a Chourio jersey draped around it, then filled up the stroller with non-alcoholic beer and champagne. Reliable Cubs reliever expected to leave after strong 2024 season. The Chicago Cubs have fallen out of postseason contention and now are at risk of finishing in third place in the National League Central behind both the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals. If they want to contend in 2025, they are going to have to make some key upgrades, especially with their bullpen. One key piece that has helped them this season is right-hander Jorge Lopez. Lopez was picked up after the New York Mets let him go and has performed well with the North Siders, posting a 2.19 ERA in 22 appearances.

Landon Knack 'Certainly In the Mix' For Dodgers Postseason Roster. Landon Knack has not had a significant number of opportunities with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he's certainly impressed when given the chance. Despite the rough outing, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Knack would keep getting chances and that would not affect their decision on his standing for the postseason roster. Knack was back on the mound five days later and bounced back in a big way. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 18 while giving up just two hits and striking out seven.

Cubs expected to lose veteran reliever after disappointing 2024. The Chicago Cubs have been struggling as of late. The Cubs are now out of contention and may end up saying goodbye to some players this coming offseason. Zachary Rotman of FanSided predicted that they will lose left-hander Drew Smyly in free agency. "The Cubs have use for a pitcher like Smyly, but they won't be picking up their end of his $10 million mutual option after this season," Rotman wrote.

American League East Team Named Suitor for Pending Philadelphia Phillies Free Agent. When the Philadelphia Phillies traded for Carlos Estevez at the deadline, it was uncertain if the front office viewed the move as one to only help them win right now. If history suggests anything, the Phillies don't trade for players just to make a move. If Dave Dombrowski believes Estevez would be a valuable piece to the bullpen moving forward, which he's proven to be, he'll look to keep him around, despite the chances of him leaving in free agency. Estevez was arguably the best reliever traded at the deadline.

The champagne was popping in the Milwaukee Brewers clubhouse Wednesday night as the scrappy NL Central team celebrated a division title. Not everyone was enjoying bubbly adult beverages though, most notably Brewers star outfielder Jackson Chourio. Chourio, 20, cannot legally indulge in drinking alcohol, so the Brewers playfully laid into Chourio's youth by giving him special beverages to celebrate with. Milwaukee set up a bucket full of non-alcoholic beer and champagne (perhaps sparkling cider) in front of Chourio's locker.

Cardinals could reunite with standout starter to bolster rotation for 2025. The St. Louis Cardinals are going to have some holes to fill in the offseason. Both Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson could ultimately be gone, as they have club options for 2025 that may not be picked up. This will leave a hole in their rotation. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery has struggled with the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, though he does have a player option for 2025 that he could potentially decline.

Jake Bauers hit an RBI single in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers, who had clinched the NL Central earlier in the day, beat Philadelphia 2-1 to prevent the Phillies from securing a playoff berth. Marcell Ozuna homered, Gio Urshela drove in three runs and Spencer Schwellenbach pitched six innings of one-run ball as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night. The win allowed the Braves to stay within two games of the Mets for the final National League wild card spot. Ozuna greeted Tony Santillan with his 38th home run of the season in the seventh, a solo shot that broke a 1-1 tie. The blast ended Ozuna’s home run drought at 26 games and his RBI drought at 19 games.

Shohei Ohtani stole his 49th base and moved closer to becoming the first player in major league history with 50 homers and 50 steals in a season as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Miami Marlins 8-4. Ohtani, who began the day two shy of each mark, singled to lead off the game then swiped second. He flew out to left, struck out, lined out to right and struck out in his next four plate appearances. Dodgers Injury Update: Gavin Stone 'Very Unlikely' To Return In 2024. Gavin Stone was among the Los Angeles Dodgers' most effective pitchers in 2024, but unfortunately, he was also one of the many that suffered an injury. Shohei Ohtani is getting closer to making himself the sole member of an exclusive club.
He's already the sixth player in major league history and the fastest ever to reach 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases, needing just 126 games.
He’s the only player to hit the 40-40 mark in the same game. He did it in style, too, on a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Aug. 23.
“He’s very goal-oriented,” Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He likes to take down records.”
On the horizon for Ohtani is potentially becoming the first member of the 50-50 club.
He blasted his 48th homer on Tuesday and has 48 stolen bases with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Ohtani signed a $700 million, 10-year deal with the Dodgers last December. The two-way Japanese superstar hasn’t pitched this season — his first with the Dodgers after six years with the Los Angeles Angels — as he rehabilitates after surgery for an injured elbow ligament that he had a year ago. That has allowed Ohtani to focus on his hitting.
Los Angeles leads the National League West and will be headed to the postseason in October, which will be another first for Ohtani. He didn’t reach the postseason with the Angels, and they never had a winning record during his tenure in Anaheim.

Bryce Harper's moon-shot homer for the Phillies puts his power outage in the past. Off the bat, it seemed as if Brewers center fielder Garrett Mitchell might have a shot at it. Harper hit it sky-high, with a launch angle of 36 degrees. The highest proportion of home runs in the majors this season have had launch angles within the range of 24 and 31 degrees. Mets dealt terrible Christian Scott injury blow. The New York Mets will be without one of their young starters for the remainder of 2024 and all of the 2025 season. Right-hander Christian Scott is set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week as announced by his agent, per SNY. Scott, a fifth-round pick in 2021, was called up to the show in May and made nine appearances, compiling a 4.56 ERA. The 25-year-old suffered the elbow injury in July and spent time on the IL.

Charlie Condon, Rockies' first-round pick, gets first taste of Coors Field. Charlie Condon hit 37 homers and batted .433 his junior season at Georgia, so of course he was excited to take batting practice at Coors Field on Tuesday afternoon. “It was so cool to put it on and wear Rockies across my chest and kind of take a tour around the facility,” he said. “You can tell this guy has a really good head on his shoulders and I really liked the initial impression,” said manager Bud Black, who met Condon in person for the first time on Monday. Condon, considered the best hitter in college baseball by many, struggled in his first bit of limited action in pro baseball.

Kodai Senga could return to much improved Mets rotation. Kodai Senga will be eligible to come off the IL on Sept. 25 and the Mets still have decisions to make regarding the right-hander , who has been out since suffering a strained calf on July 26 in his lone start of the season in the majors. Senga threw a bullpen session Tuesday at Citi Field and went through fielding drills as the team holds out hope he might be able to provide something in a potential playoff series.
