3/26/24 Tampa Bay Rays Opening Day 2024: How To Watch; World Series Odds. The Tampa Bay Rays are finally back in action on Thursday, March 28, with an Opening Day game against the Toronto Blue Jays. All 30 MLB teams will play on Opening Day for the second straight year, though the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres technically kicked off the regular season with a two-game series in Seoul, South Korea, last week. Here's what you need to know about the Rays first game. With Shane McClanahan recovering from Tommy John surgery, Zach Elfin is expected to take the mound for the Rays against the Blue Jays, according to MLB.com.

2/21/24 Attrition vs. tradition: After heavy losses, Tampa Bay Rays hope to defy odds yet again. In their nearly three decades of existence, the Tampa Bay Rays have given every reason for fans to fixate on what they don't have. After winning their first 13 games in 2023 and 27 of their first 33, elbow injuries shelved three members of their stellar pitching rotation, including ace Shane McClanahan. A season of great promise went sideways, yet even though they conceded the division crown, the Rays won 99 games and reached the playoffs a fifth consecutive year. The new year brought the trade of hard-throwing Tyler Glasnow to the Dodgers and the injured starters are still out, even if wounded pitchers Jeffrey Springs and Drew Rasmussen should return in the summer.

2/14/24 Tampa Bay Rays Opened Spring Training With Questions At Multiple Positions. Regardless of the set of power rankings you preferred to peruse heading into spring training, the Tampa Bay Rays are once again somewhere in the top 10. For different reasons, Shane McClanahan, Jeffrey Springs, Drew Rasmussen and Tyler Glasnow are not preparing for Grapefruit League action. Then there is Wander Franco, or the lack of Wander Franco, whose future remains uncertain. Not that manager Kevin Cash and president of baseball operations Erik Neander are hanging their heads.

1/11/24 Rays sign 8 of 10 arbitration eligible players. The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to terms for the 2024 season with eight of their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including a unique deal for rehabbing ace Shane McClanahan. Sugar Shane has signed a two-year, incentive laden contract while he recovers from Tommy John surgery, which he elected to have on August 21 last year, that will pay a base salary of $3.6 million in 2024 and 2025, with escalators for games started this season, which would increase his 2025 salary by $120,000 for each start. These incentives would seem to indicate that McClanahan could be ready for return near the end of the 2024 season (i.e. playoffs). The players agreed are listed below, descending in order of service time

12/16/23 Rays Have Plenty Of Rotation Options Following Tyler Glasnow Trade. When the Rays arrived for spring training in Lake Buena Vista 10 months ago, the rotation featured Shane McClanahan, Tyler Glasnow, Drew Rasmussen, Jeffrey Springs and Zach Eflin. The likes of Josh Fleming, Yonny Chirinos and Luis Patino were also in the mix with the possibility Taj Bradley, MLB.com's No. 20 prospect heading into 2023, would emerge at some point.

10/04/23 October Nathan Eovaldi is Different, Blue Jays Botch Big Moment, More Wild Card Takes. The Tampa Bay Rays started the year 13-0 and spent 12 of the first 13 weeks of the 2023 season in the No. 1 spot in B/R's weekly power rankings. Before the Atlanta Braves juggernaut offense hit its stride, they looked like the team to beat. It would be easy to point to injuries to Shane McClanahan, Jeffrey Springs and Drew Rasmussen in the starting rotation and sluggers Brandon Lowe and Luke Raley in the starting lineup. Or to say that this is a young roster, that the Texas Rangers offense was clicking, or that Nathan Eovaldi simply pitched a gem.

Tampa Bay Rays All-Star Shane McClanahan is frustrated but determined following his second Tommy John surgery. 8/16/23 Rays ace Shane McClanahan to undergo Tommy John surgery; may not return until 2025. Last week, Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said it was "highly unlikely" that his ace in Shane McClanahan would pitch again this season. Cash announced on Wednesday to reporters that the two-time All-Star will undergo Tommy John surgery. This is McClanahan's fourth trip to the IL in his three-year career and his second this season. McClanahan was 11-2 with a 3.26 ERA, and he allowed five earned runs in four innings in his most recent start against the struggling New York Yankees.

8/10/23 Why do Rays have so many pitchers with elbow injuries?. In the aftermath of another elbow injury, there is a renewed sense of dread. Why does this keep happening to the Tampa Bay Rays? Shane McClanahan is likely out for the season, joining Jeffrey Springs and Drew Rasmussen before him.

8/09/23 The Tampa Bay Rays are running out of dudes, and ESPN somehow becomes more of a farce. The Rays might be the best developmental organization in baseball, staying on top of an AL East where they're constantly outspent by factors of three by their competitors by consistently bringing dudes through their system and onto the MLB roster. When the post-mortem season is performed, and the study of how the Rays went from looking to be the best team in baseball, or at least Atlanta-level, it'll come down to how many pitchers they lost during the season. Yesterday it came out that Shane McClanahan, the team's ace, is likely not going to pitch again this season and may be headed for the land of John, Tommy.

8/08/23 Rays All-Star pitcher McClanahan is likely to miss the rest of the season. Tampa Bay Rays All-Star left-hander Shane McClanahan's may not pitch again this season. Rays manager Kevin Cash said before Tuesday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals that McClanahan will have his arm evaluated soon but it is "highy unlikely" that he will pitch again this season.

8/08/23 Key to Rays' reversal? Wander Franco's all-around play. ST. PETERSBURG —There certainly still are some points of concern for the Tampa Bay Rays, with Shane McClanahan and Tyler Glasnow missing starts, Randy Arozarena sporting the American League's second-lowest post-All-Star Game batting average (.137) and the gap behind East-leading Baltimore growing to three games. Ahead is a month-plus of mostly struggling to middling opponents, starting with the NL Central-trailing St. Louis Cardinals tonight. Perhaps most important of all, the Rays' best player has been their best player. Wander Franco had more to do with the team's 6-3 run through the Houston Astros, N.Y. Yankees and Detroit Tigers than any Ray, hitting .389 with a 1.241 OPS and making a series of dazzling plays at shortstop.

8/07/23 Tampa Bay Rays Updated Pennant and World Series Odds. For most of the MLB regular season, the Tampa Bay Rays have been the class of the American League. The biggest question mark surrounding the Rays revolves around the health of starting pitcher Shane McClanahan.

McClanahan has made 21 starts, has a 3.29 ERA, and is 11-2 on the season. The first was against Baltimore on July 22, and the latest was on Wednesday night against the New York Yankees.
