7/21/21 Mariners' use of 'opener' strategy in bullpen game backfires immediately in road loss to Rockies. With Hector Santiago suspended for 10 games for using a legal substance in a supposedly illegal way, and the team unable to fill his roster spot, the Mariners added McCaughan, a starter for the Rainiers, to pitch multiple innings vs. the Rockies. In an effort to provide a “soft landing” in his MLB debut in the least pitcher-friendly park in baseball, the Mariners opted to use right-hander Keynan Middleton as an opener before McCaughan enter the game.

7/19/21 Mariners Moose Tracks, 7/19/21: Hector Santiago, Mariners draft signings, Starling Marte, Liam Castellanos. I’m typing these links (filling in for Anders, who does these links without fail and is so great about them and I just want to shout him out publicly for it) while watching Quick Pitch, MLB Network’s daily summation of what happened in MLB that day. So far heading into the break I’ve gotten a tease about Ohtani beating out an infield hit, aka something scores of players do across the league every day, and also him hitting his 34th home run; no mention in the teaser of the Mariners taking that se...

7/09/21 Resolution on Mariners reliever Hector Santiago's appeal for a 'foreign substance' coming Wednesday. It appears there will finally be a resolution to the absurdity surrounding Mariners lefty Hector Santiago, his 10-game suspension for having an “undisclosed foreign substance” on his glove and his subsequent appeal. Santiago and Mariners manager Scott Servais said that Major League Baseball will offer its ruling on his appeal on Wednesday. That was the day they put out there where they would have some decision,” Servais said.

7/02/21 Where's MLB's transparency with Mariners' Hector Santiago's suspension?. The league – which collected Santiago’s glove in what looked like a kitchen trash bag and flew it to New York – claimed it didn’t need to inspect Santiago’s glove any further That’s it. And that’s not enough. Because at the very least, the public needs to know what that substance was.

7/01/21 Yeah, I'm Gonna Have To Call You Back: Time Will Tell. While it seems like opposing team managers may be taking advantage of the fact they can request an inspection of pitchers, some have been bold enough to continue their use of the foreign substances and have begun paying the price. Hector Santiago, Seattle Mariners pitcher, was ejected from the game against the White Sox after having his glove inspected. The ejection is also paired with a 10 game suspension.
