2/19/24 Texas Rangers Reliever David Robertson Negotiates Contracts Sans Agent. Reliever David Robertson is one of the very few professional athletes who represent himself. Robertson started representing himself in 2019 when he signed a one-year deal with the Phillies.

Robertson, 38, split last season between the Mets and Marlins, putting up a combined 3.03 in 62 appearances. After he recorded a 2.05 ERA and 14 saves in 40 appearances for the Mets, the team traded him to Miami while selling their talent at the deadline. When Robertson signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Mets before the 2023 season, he was poised to serve in a setup position for closer Edwin Diaz.

1/20/24 Could the Cubs reuniting with David Robertson make sense?. The Cubs bullpen needs a lot of work, and they'll need to add multiple experienced arms before Spring Training. One name on the free agent board is former Cubs closer David Robertson. The veteran righty recorded 14 saves and pitched to a 2.23 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 36 appearances for the Cubs in 2022 before being traded to the Phillies for Ben Brown. Last season between the Mets and Marlins he pitched to a 3.03 ERA, 3.55 FIP, 1.19 WHIP, 10.7 K/9, and 3.4 BB/9 in 62 appearances.

11/07/23 David Robertson was an ideal free agent signing for the Mets. A year ago, the Mets were in their seemingly annual position of needing to cobble together a passable bullpen in the offseason. Robertson had spent several years in New York with the Yankees at the beginning of his career, and was coming off a season in which he pitched very well for the Chicago Cubs, got traded to the Phillies at the deadline, and struggled with his new team as they went on a remarkable postseason run. It was hard to anticipate that Robertson replicate the same exact arc in his 2023 season—mainly because we all assumed that the Mets would be good enough that the idea of trading him at the deadline would be ludicrous.

9/19/23 Ex-Mets pitcher. When the Mets sent David Robertson to the Marlins at the trade deadline, the move made sense for both sides. The Mets unloaded pitchers Max Scherzer (Rangers) and Justin Verlander (Astros) and added Robertson to the frenzy— giving the Marlins an experienced closer before the playoff hunt.

8/31/23 MLB world reacts as closer's insane meltdown continues. Miami Marlins fans cheered when the team acquired closer David Robertson at the trade deadline. Since notching a save in his Marlins debut July 30, Robertson has imploded. Another disaster unfolded Wednesday night, when the 38-year-old veteran allowed three earned runs in the 10th inning in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

8/28/23 Homesick ex-Mets star, a miserable flop after trade, has lost his job. When the Miami Marlins acquired reliever David Robertson during the Mets' trade-deadline fire sale, he was having one of his best seasons with a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings. In 10 appearances with the Marlins, he's posted a sky-high 7.20 ERA, with just four saves in seven chances — and has lost his job as closer, according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald. Tanner Scott is likely to assume the role, Mish reports. When the Marlins acquired Robertson — who signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Mets prior to the 2023 season — they were 54-49 and challenging for one of the NL wild card spots.

8/03/23 Mets had two 'acceptable' offers before making stunning blockbuster. First, came the trade of closer David Robertson, which signaled the Mets wouldn't be buyers. Then came stunner No. 1: Max Scherzer was heading to the Texas Rangers for prospect Luisangel Acuña. On Tuesday, the Mets completed blockbuster No. 2 that recalibrated expectations for next season and the future: Justin Verlander was dealt to the Houston Astros for two top prospects.
