3/30/21 Are Innings Eaters Like Gio Gonzalez Going Extinct?. Gonzalez is the 18th pitcher with at least 100 wins to stop pitching — “retire” is not a universally applicable word — since the end of the 2016 season. Some of these hurlers just broke down (Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Jered Weaver) or pitched as long as their bodies would allow (Bronson Arroyo, Kyle Lohse, CC Sabathia). Some retired even though they probably could have pitched another year or two (R.A. Dickey, John Lackey).

By this time, the Nationals had not only built a 6 1/2 game division lead over Atlanta, but they were the best team in baseball at 80-51, reaching their 2011 win total with 31 games to play. By the time Gonzalez won his 21st game on Sept. the Nats had clinched their first postseason berth and were closing in on their first NL East title.

The 35-year-old says on Instagram that he’s at peace with the decision to retire after parts of 13 major league seasons and nearly 17 years in pro ball overall. In my estimation, Gonzalez was seventh or eighth on the Marlins starting pitching depth chart.

9/08/20 Gonzalez returns to White Sox, ready to help in any role. Gio Gonzalez is back with the White Sox, and that should be good news for a team that needs help in the starting rotation. Unfortunately for the Sox, the 34-year-old lefty is only built up enough to throw 2 innings at the moment, with only 18 games remaining in the shortened regular season. If Gonzalez is only able to pitch out of the bullpen, so be it.

8/24/20 Strikeouts the down side of White Sox's home run barrage. Making any kind of comparisons in this COVID-19 shortened season is probably a futile exercise, but let's attempt one anyway. The present day White Sox are looking a lot like the 2000 Sox, one of the more entertaining teams I've chronicled through the years. Both teams had/have offenses that "demolish baseballs," as pitcher Gio Gonzalez described the 2020 White Sox.
