5/06/24 Shota Imanaga Off To Great Start In His First Month With The Cubs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto got virtually all of the attention among Japanese import starting pitchers in last offseason's free agent period. While he's been good if not great after signing a mega-deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it's been Shota Imanaga who has been the talk of the National League since signing a four-year, $53 million contract (with a maximum value of $80 million) with the Chicago Cubs. Like Japanese hurlers going all the way back to Hideo Nomo, part of his success derives from his uniqueness - players subject to the amateur draft often fall into cookie-cutter molds, throwing the same offerings out of the same slots. Nomo had a 2.45 ERA in 1995, his first year in the states, and was below 2.00 well into August.

AP By Jimmy Hascup | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com The Yankees and Mets can blame a two-way superstar for failing to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the offseason. Despite their best efforts , Yamamoto chose with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a 12-year, $325 million deal. According to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale , one of the New York teams would have landed Yamamoto otherwise if not for Shohei Ohtani, who is also Japanese and signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers weeks before . 5/05/24 The 2 teams Yoshinobu Yamamoto considered signing with besides Dodgers. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is starting to prove why he's a star in the making for the Los Angeles Dodgers. After allowing five runs in a single inning to start his MLB career, the 25-year-old phenom has allowed just seven across his next 33.0 innings. Yamamoto followed Shohei Ohtani, his teammate on the 2023 World Baseball Classic-winning squad, to the Dodgers, adding even more hype to a team with World Series expectations. According to Bob Nightengale, Yamamoto would have signed with a team in the other major MLB market if not for Ohtani signing with and recruiting him to Los Angeles.
