5/03/24 Mariners ride hot streak into opener of series with Astros. A 5-2 home loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday prevented Seattle from completing a three-game series sweep of a top contender in the National League, but it did not stem the tide of the Mariners' recent run of excellence. The Mariners, who begin a seven-game road trip on Friday against the Houston Astros, have won five consecutive series. Seattle is 7-3 over the past 10 games, and before Emerson Hancock scuffled for 3 2/3 innings in the series finale against Atlanta, the Mariners rotation set a club record with 18 consecutive starts allowing two or fewer earned runs.

4/30/24 How Seattle Mariners could keep Hancock when Woo returns. The Seattle Mariners seem to be are on the verge of one of those classic good problems to have in baseball. Seattle's rotation has been on an astoundingly great run, registering 17 straight games in which M's starters have not allowed more than two earned runs. Making that all the more impressive is the fact that the Mariners, who lead the American League West with a 16-13 record, aren't even at full strength when it comes to their starting pitching. Rookie right-hander Emerson Hancock has logged two of the starts in those 17 games, and he currently is on a three-game personal streak of quality starts.

4/20/24 Mariners, Rockies deal with weekend tweaks to rotation. The Mariners' scheduled starter for Friday, right-hander Emerson Hancock (1-2, 7.98 ERA), will be pushed back to the second game on Sunday. Instead, right-hander Luis Castillo (0-4, 5.82) will go Saturday after five days' rest. Castillo, the ace of Seattle's staff coming into the season, will have a tough act to follow after four pitchers combined on a one-hitter in a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. "We are driven by our pitching staff and playing really good defense, and I think that's the thing that stood out for me here over the last probably week or so is we have played much cleaner baseball," Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

4/07/24 Mariners drop another series in blowout loss to Brewers. The decision to remove Emerson Hancock from his second start of the season came down effectiveness, pitches thrown and innings worked. As Sunday's series finale at American Family Stadium devolved into what would be a lopsided 12-4 loss to the Brewers, Servais had to figure out how much and how far he could push his young starter to give some coverage to a bullpen that didn't have every reliever available to cover any remaining innings while also plausibly trying to win the game. When Hancock was able to work a scoreless third inning with two more strikeouts, Servais sent him back out for the fourth hoping to steal at least one more scoreless frame. Instead, Oliver Dunn led off with a triple to the corner in right field.

3/30/24 Mariners' Emerson Hancock comfortable, confident ahead of first start. Doesn't matter how Emerson Hancock made the Mariners' opening-day roster. The Mariners' top pitching prospect is scheduled to make his season debut when the Mariners open their second series against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night at T-Mobile Park. “He came into camp in a really good place,” pitching coach Pete Woodworth said. Hancock, a 24-year-old right-hander, made three starts for the Mariners last season, and his last appearance at T-Mobile Park was his major-league debut on Aug. 9 against the San Diego Padres.

8/24/23 Dipoto: Where Seattle Mariners' pitching depth, rotation plan stands. The Seattle Mariners have played themselves into playoff position, and their pitching deserves the lion's share of credit. The question now, however, is how well the depth of that pitching is holding up as the M's go into the final 35 games of the regular season. Seattle was dealt a blow this week when rookie starter Emerson Hancock had to leave an outing in Houston after just two innings. The good news is the Mariners received fellow rookie starter Bryan Woo back from an IL stint for right forearm inflammation on Tuesday, keeping the rotation full with five pitchers.

(Photo credit: Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports) The Seattle Mariners transferred right-handed pitcher Emerson Hancock to the 60-day injured list and reinstated right-hander Bryan Woo from the 15-day IL among a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday. Woo will make his 12th career major league start in Tuesday night's game at the Chicago White Sox. Hancock, a rookie like Woo, exited his start Sunday against Houston after two scoreless innings with a right shoulder strain. He was placed on the 15-day IL Monday before the move Tuesday, which ends his season. The sixth overall pick of the 2020 draft is no stranger to arm injuries. His start to last season was delayed by a lat strain. In three starts for
