5/15/25 Meet the Pirates' New Boss, Same as the Old Boss. T he announcement made late last week was brief but all-encompassing. And no, I'm not talking about the firing of Derek Shelton . The one that really betrayed the wretched state of Pirates baseball in 2025 was issued a day after the Pirates had announced Shelton had been “relieved of his duties” as manager. It wasn't a press release on official Pirates letterhead, just an email fired off last Friday detailing yet another in a seemingly endless succession of meaningless transactions: “The Pittsburgh Pirates today placed infielder Enmanuel Valdez on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. Infielder/outfielder Ji Hwan Bae has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.” Shelton exited

5/14/25 Pirates Transfer Infielder to 60-Day Injured List. The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Thursday that infielder Enmanuel Valdez has been transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL, effectively sidelining him until at least mid-July as he continues to recover from left shoulder inflammation. Valdez, 26, was initially placed on the 10-day IL on May 5 after struggling with discomfort in his throwing shoulder. The move to the 60-day IL is procedural, opening a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired utility player Michael Helman, but it also confirms that Valdez's recovery will take longer than initially expected. Acquired from the Boston Red Sox in an offseason trade, Valdez had been serving as a versatile infielder for the Pirates, primarily filling in at first base due to injuries elsewhere on the roster.

5/09/25 Pirates Place Infielder On Injured list. The Pittsburgh Pirates lost another player to injury, which is becoming a consistent theme for them in 2025. The Pirates announced that they placed infielder Enmanuel Valdez on the 10-Day Injured List with left shoulder inflammation. While Valdez was likely called up as extra depth at second base, he has played primarily at first base, starting there 22 times, while starting just three times at second base, all coming during a road series vs. the Cincinnati Reds, Arpil 11-13.

4/20/25 Pirates Get Great News on Infielder's Injury. The Pittsburgh Pirates may have one of their infielders back for their series finale vs. the Cleveland Guardians at PNC Park. The Pirates trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning and first baseman Enmanuel Valdez came up, facing Guardians All-Star closer in right-handed pitcher Emmanuel Clase. Valdez took a pitch off of Clase and hit it deep to center field, giving him extra bases. This caused him to take his right hand off the third base bag and Guardians All-Star third baseman José Ramírez tagged him.

4/19/25 Pirates Lose Out After Controversial Call Following Injury. The Pittsburgh Pirates had a opportunity that could've started a comeback vs. the Cleveland Guardians at PNC Park, but a controversial call from the umpire crew ended those hopes.
