Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Javier Assad has been diagnosed with a mild oblique strain, manager Craig Counsell told WGN-TV's Josh Frydman and other reporters Tuesday afternoon. Counsell said Monday that Assad was dealing with oblique soreness. The Cubs were the first team to officially welcome pitchers and catchers to spring training, opening up camp on Sunday. Early on in the year, Javier Assad pitched like an ace alongside Shota Imanaga as the Chicago Cubs did their best to weather the Opening Night loss of Justin Steele. A 4.38 ERA in his final dozen starts, including a bloated 6.86 ERA in September and October, did little to inspire confidence in Assad as a member of the rotation next season.
