4/29/24 Mets' Mark Vientos staying in moment, handling himself 'very well' in return to majors. Carlos Mendoza stuck to his word and had Mark Vientos back in the New York Mets' lineup on Monday night, starting at third base, for their series opener against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field. The 24-year-old had been back in the majors for just two days before playing the hero on Sunday afternoon with a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Mets to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. “For him to come through in that situation, especially with what he's been through since he was sent down to the minor leagues,” Mendoza said. Vientos, who has received sporadic playing time in the majors over the last two seasons, was initially positioned to be the Mets' everyday designated hitter — at least that was the perception during spring training.

4/28/24 Vientos hits 2-run homer in 11th and Mets rally past Cardinals 4-2 to avoid sweep. Mark Vientos hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning on his second day in the majors this season to give the New York Mets a 4-2 comeback victory over the St. Louis Cardinals that prevented a three-game sweep. New York was 0 for 15 with runners in scoring position and down to its last strike when Harrison Bader singled home automatic runner DJ Stewart from third base with the tying run. Vientos, who singled as a pinch hitter in the ninth, then drove a 1-2 pitch from Matthew Liberatore just beyond the glove of a leaping Michael Siani at the right-center fence.

4/27/24 Mets call up Mark Vientos in surprise move. Mark Vientos has returned to Citi Field. The designated hitter and infielder was added to the Mets roster on Saturday ahead of their game against the Cardinals, but no countermove has been made yet. “Not yet,” Vientos told reporters when asked if he knew what his role would be with the Mets, who are 13-12 and third in the NL East. “They haven't said anything yet. Whatever they want me to do, I'm here for it.” The Mets sent Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse at the start of the season just three days after they signed J.D. 3/30/24 Vientos homers and doubles, but Syracuse drops Saturday matinee to Rochester, 6-2. Mark Vientos doubled, homered, reached base three times, and scored twice, but the Syracuse Mets otherwise fell victim to some strong Rochester Red Wings pitching on Saturday afternoon, being held to just two runs on six hits in the midst of a 6-2 loss. The Mets had eight hits and two home runs in their season-opening 6-3 win on Friday afternoon. Rochester (1-1) got on the board in the top of the first off Syracuse (1-1) starter José Butto with a little bit of fortuitous help. First, a pair of one-out singles from James Wood and Juan Yepez put two runners on base for the Red Wings, followed by a fielder's choice groundout from Travis Blankenhorn that advanced Wood to third.

3/28/24 Mets get JD to DH. Despite his insistence on using the designated hitter as a rotation spot in the lineup for his players to get at-bats, with Mark Vientos being the primary beneficiary, Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns reversed himself last Thursday by signing veteran slugger JD Martinez to handle those duties. The designated hitter position has long been a vexing problem for the Mets as they have gotten little production from it. The DH has traditionally been for players who can hit but have defensive liabilities. Dominic Smith and Daniel Vogelbach were DH underachievers.

3/24/24 What to know about the Mets roster decisions after Mark Vientos sent to minors. Mark Vientos is heading back to the minor leagues and DJ Stewart may soon join him. Ji-Man Choi and Jose Iglesias have to decide whether they will follow them there as well. The Mets made some key roster decisions before they defeated the Washington Nationals 10-1 in their final Grapefruit League game of the spring slate Sunday, informing Vientos and Choi that they would not make the team. Vientos was optioned to minor league camp and will begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse once again, a difficult turn of events given how excited he was when he came into camp.

Vientos holds a career .205 batting average, .610 OPS, with 10 home runs and 25 RBI across 254 at-bats. “I walk around here with a chip on my shoulder,” Vientos said (h/t SNY).
