The Boston Red Sox reportedly made somewhat of a surprising move Sunday, releasing a veteran reliever who was a serviceable option in the bullpen over the course of the last two seasons. The Red Sox released right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura according to multiple reports Sunday. He posted a respectable 3.39 ERA in 103 2/3 innings across 104 games in his Red Sox career. That’s compared to a league-average zone rate over 48 percent, which is a good explanation for how you end a season with a nearly 14 percent walk rate as Sawamura did last season. Now, in fairness to the Sox reliever he leans heavily on two pitchers that are often designed to be thrown out of the zone, but even with that context a 39 percent zone rate is almost shockingly low. 8/18/21	Red Sox need bullpen to step up. Since the trade deadline, the Red Sox bullpen has not been good, and Boston's best relievers have been a big part of the problem. Dating back to July 29, the day before the trade deadline, Barnes, Ottavino, Whitlock, Taylor and Hirokazu Sawamura have combined to post a 6.59 ERA over 27.1 innings and are responsible for 20 of the 49 earned runs allowed by the bullpen during that time.
