1/19/24 Scott Kingery, pitching prospects among Phillies spring training invitees. Scott Kingery and young pitching prospects Mick Abel and Griff McGarry are among 15 players the Phillies invited to spring training on Thursday as non-roster players. Signed to a six-year, $24 million contract before he'd ever played in the bigs, the Phillies bought out Kingery for $1 million in 2024 in lieu of a $13 million option after he appeared in just one game for the big-league club in the last two seasons. Abel was steady in 2023. The 22-year-old first-rounder in the 2020 draft went 5-5 with a 4.14 ERA in 22 starts with Double-A Reading.

11/03/23 Phillies decline Scott Kingery's option, making him a free agent. The Scott Kingery era is over. Six seasons after the Phillies signed Kingery for $24 million, 17 months after he last appeared in a major league game, 901 days since his last big league at-bat, the team made the fully expected move of declining its $13 million option on his contract for 2024. Kingery received a $1 million buyout and became a free agent. One of the most hyped prospects in modern Phillies history, with a catchy nickname (remember “Scotty Jetpax?”) and opposing scouts who compared him to Dustin Pedroia, Kingery wound up being one of the biggest busts.

6/17/23 IronPigs lose third consecutive game to Toledo MudHens. Lehigh Valley's woes with runners in scoring position continued and so did its losing streak. Toledo scored seven runs in the third inning to overcome an early deficit and won 9-5 on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 10,100 at Coca-Cola Park. The IronPigs were 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position, 6 for 43 during their three-game losing streak to the MudHens. Lehigh Valley, which stranded at least one runner in every inning but one, had the bases loaded and Scott Kingery as the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth.

4/19/23 Scott Kingery looking to come full circle with IronPigs. Scott Kingery called an impromptu postgame meeting earlier this month with IronPigs hitting coach Joe Thurston after a 2-for-18 homestand. Excited and encouraged after a strong spring training with the Phillies followed by three extra-base hits in his first two Triple-A games, Kingery was frustrated by the results that followed the next five games. With his 29th birthday at the end of this month in the last of his six-year contract with the Phillies, Kingery's desire to see statistics match his effort has intensified.

3/21/23 Pirates come back to beat Phillies 4-3. Trailing by one in the bottom of the ninth, the Pittsburgh Pirates sparked a rally and came back to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon in Bradenton. The Phillies jumped to an early lead in the second after a single by Scott Kingery drove in the game's first run. Jake Cave followed in the fifth with his third home run of the spring, and Weston Wilson knocked in the third run on a single to center in the top of the sixth. The Pirates responded in the bottom of the sixth, though, as Andrew McCutchen brought the deficit to one after a two-run home run, marking his “first” home run back with the Pirates since 2017.

3/18/23 The Return of the King: How Scott Kingery Fits On The Phillies Roster. Scott Kingery's last impactful moment for the Philadelphia Phillies came nearly three years ago. During the dregs of the pandemic, and one of the most dreadful Phillies seasons in recent memory, Kingery hit a walk-off home run to top the Atlanta Braves in 11 innings, then hit the injured list just three days later. To that point, he had slashed .233/.283/.390 in 1060 plate appearances as a Phillie. In his third Major League season, Kingery had already been labeled a bust.

3/17/23 Phillies takeaways as opening day looms: Case for Scott Kingery, who's having best camp and more. When the Phillies turned Scott Kingery into a jack-of-all-trades utility player as an ascending rookie in 2018, the critics screamed that shuttling between positions would be detrimental to his development. And he's finally healthy after shoulder surgery in 2021 and long recovery that dragged into last season.

1/28/23 Scott Kingery was going to be the Phillies' next big star. Now he's down to one last chance to show it. And although he’s a Buster Douglas-level long shot to win a spot on the Phillies’ bench in the final guaranteed year of his infamous contract, well, stranger things have happened. If I’m being honest, it almost feels like some of the spring trainings I had before I signed the contract,” Kingery said. It feels like I’m going in without those expectations.
