10/31/23 Cardinals continue pruning 40-man roster, more moves to come before offseason accelerates. The Cardinals' steady creation over the past week of spots on their 40-man roster continued with reliever Jacob Barnes electing to become a free agent Monday after passing unclaimed through waivers. Whenever the World Series ends this week and the offseason begins, officially, the players on the 60-day injured list return to the 40-man roster, and that, for all teams, begins another round of opening spots for the annual winter moves such as signing players or protecting prospects. The Cardinals currently have five players on the 60-day injured list following long-term injuries during the season: outfielder Dylan Carlson (foot surgery), utility fielder Brendan Donovan (elbow surgery), pitcher Guillermo Zuniga (forearm), pitcher Wilking Rodriguez (shoulder), and lefty Packy Naughton (elbow surgery).
