5/09/24 Even after 'the ultimate flush-it game,' Mariners' offensive issues linger. Play-by-play man Aaron Goldsmith dubbed it “the ultimate flush-it game.” Which is an apropos descriptor for the Mariners' morose matinee, an 11-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Target Field Thursday. The thud snapped Seattle's streak of six consecutive series wins, as the Mariners dropped three of four to a stampeding Twins team that has won 15 of its last 17 games. This was a comprehensively dispiriting dud — complete with 15 Mariner strikeouts; a five-run Twins first inning against stalwart starter Logan Gilbert; six scattered Mariner hits; two errors; and a Mitch Garver liner that ricocheted off the glove of third baseman Jose Miranda, turned right and fell flukily into shortstop Willi Castro's waiting mitt.

Simeon Woods Richardson struck out a career-high eight in six shutout innings of one-hit ball, and the Minnesota Twins scored twice in the seventh to beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Monday night in the opener of their four-game series. Minnesota rebounded quickly after its 12-game winning streak was snapped Sunday with a 9-2 loss to Boston. Woods Richardson issued just one walk. The only hit he permitted was a leadoff single by Mitch Garver in the third.

3/31/24 Strikeouts pile up, runs don't as Mariners drop opening-series finale to Red Sox. The missed call didn't cost the Mariners the game. No, their continued refusal to stop swinging at breaking pitches and their series-long inability to hit them were larger issues in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Red Sox in the finale of the four-game series. While a slew of offseason moves, including the additions of Mitch Garver and Jorge Polanco and the reacquisition of Mitch Haniger, were theoretically supposed to improve a Mariners offense that was far too prone to strikeout and struggled to hit breaking pitches, the first four games provided little evidence to suggest it is better. A year ago, Seattle went 1-3 in the season-opening series at T-Mobile Park, posting a .197./254/.318 slash line with12 runs scored,  26 hits (10 doubles, two homers), eight walks and 35 strikeouts in 142 plate appearances.

3/28/24 Meet the Mariners 2024 starting lineup. xxx After narrowly missing out on the AL West crown and the postseason in 2023, the Mariners were forced to get creative this offseason. But that didn’t stop them from putting together a seemingly deeper lineup. Will signing Mitch Garver and trading for Mitch Haniger, Jorge Polanco and Luke Raley take Seattle’s offense to the […]

3/18/24 Why the Mariners, new DH Mitch Garver might be a perfect match. Designated hitter has been a Grand Canyon-sized hole for the M's the past several years, and Mitch Garver would just like to have a healthy season for once.

3/01/24 Mitch Garver explains why he picked Mariners, adjusting to DH spot. After a few years of trying to rotate players at the designated hitter spot, the Seattle Mariners are rolling with a full-time DH in 2024 after signing Mitch Garver to a two-year deal in free agency. Garver, 33, has been a catcher for his entire career and has always been a great hitter as evidenced by his career .252/.342/.483 (.825 OPS) slash line, but staying on the field has been difficult as he's played 100 games just once in his career, and that was in 2019. Garver hasn't put the catchers gear and mitt away just yet, but the plan is for him to DH every day for the M's. During a sitdown interview with Seattle Sports' Brock and Salk from Mariners spring training, Garver discussed coming to Seattle and that shift from catcher to DHing.

Now, Garver is the Mariners' new designated hitter after signing a two-year deal with the club in free agency. The Mariners are known for their pitching as they've had one of baseball's top staffs each of the last three seasons.

2/14/24 Mariners spring training preview: Will Mitch Garver solve the DH problem?. When Nelson Cruz played his last game as a member of the Mariners in 2018, the organization decided to shift away from having a full-time designated hitter. Instead of finding another slugger that could be a daily presence in the lineup, a hitter that they likely couldn't afford or convince to sign, the front office decided to turn the DH into a revolving role where position players could get “rest” days and still be in the lineup and manager Scott Servais could take advantage of matchups vs. that day's opposing starting pitcher. In 2018, Cruz played in 136 games as the Mariners' designated hitter, amassing 572 plate appearances with a .255/.343/.511 slash line with 18 doubles, 36 homers, 95 RBI, 54 walks and 116 strikeouts.

2/14/24 Mariners spring training preview: Will Mitch Garver solve the DH problem?. The Mariners have been without a full-time DH for the last five seasons. But after signing slugger Mitch Garver in the offseason, Seattle should have a steady pressence in the lineup this year.

2/07/24 Astros Projected to Bury Rangers in AL West. The Rangers made the list, though not necessarily in a good way. The projection is that Texas will win about 86 games, finishing nine games behind the Astros in the American League West. It's not that surprising that the Texas Rangers are projected for "only" 86 wins, because they won 90 last year with a lot of things going right, and so far this winter they've subtracted Mitch Garver, Aroldis Chapman and Jordan Montgomery while possibly having Corey Seager limited by injury. It's that they're this far behind the Astros, because Texas' lineup looks absolutely loaded, especially with young outfielders Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford around for most or all of the season, and it should get some all-time great starting pitchers returning from injury as the season goes on.

1/31/24 Garver has interesting insight on Seattle Mariners' pitchers, trades. New Mariners DH Mitch Garver joined Seattle Sports' Hot Stove on Tuesday night, and he gave up the goods in a fun, insightful, two-segment visit. Salk: Did Seattle Mariners 'find a way' to get better this offseason? As it turns out, Garver's wife went into labor in Colorado while he was flying to Seattle to take the team physical and sign his contract. “The Mariners were great,” Garver said.

1/05/24 Mariners trade Robbie Ray to Giants, José Caballero to Rays in pair of Friday moves to bring Mitch Haniger home. After signing Mitch Garver on Christmas Eve, the Seattle Mariners have continued to pick up the pace of their off-season, completing two swaps today with the San Francisco Giants and Tampa Bay Rays. It started with the Mariners sending the prized off-season acquisition of 2022, Robbie Ray, to the Giants. After missing basically all of 2023 with flexor tendon surgery, Ray should be back to full health by mid-season and will help prop up a Giants rotation that's been held down by Logan Webb, the dark pact Alex Cobb signed with a sea witch for eternal youth, and not a lot else, thanks to some misses in player development.
