However, a few hours before first pitch, he was scratched from the lineup and replaced by catcher Chris Okey. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts addressed the media before the game, and said Barnes was scratched due to back tightness. There's no reason for anyone to play through injury in spring training, so it makes sense that the Dodgers are being cautious with Barnes. Austin Barnes was among the several Los Angeles Dodgers who played in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and while that entailed taking on a starting role with Team Mexico, he again was limited to time off the bench once the regular season came around. Barnes' struggles to contribute much offensively prompted the Dodgers to explore a trade for another catcher, which manager Dave Roberts revealed once the deadline passed. Roberts nevertheless continued to praise Barnes for his work with the pitching staff and expressed confidence he would improve with the bat. The Dodgers never seemed to waver from their support of Barnes even when his offensive struggles and his inability to prevent stolen bases under MLB's new runner-friendly rules spurred a lot of flak from the fan base. As the backup catcher to starter Will Smith, Barnes is mostly used as Clayton Kershaw's personal catcher or to give Smith some rest every few days. Barnes hit well in his first full season in 2017 (.289/.408/.486 with eight home runs), but he has struggled to find that same consistent offensive results since.
