A little over a month since being removed from his closer’s role, Holmes has allowed two runs over his past 14 outings and the right-hander’s five spotless innings helped the Yankees advance past the Kansas City Royals to reach the American League Championship Series. Holmes was 3-5 with 3.14 ERA and 30 saves in 67 appearances. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It was Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver at the end Thursday night, finishing up the Yankees' ALDS clinching 3-1 win over the Royals in Game 4 and completing a nearly perfect performance in the series from a bullpen that, at this point, is likely as strong as any remaining in the postseason. “We've always been confident with ourselves there,'' Holmes said of the pen. “We got a little rest [at the end of the regular season] and it did us good. The New York Yankees enjoyed a successful 2024 regular season, winning the AL East and earning the top seed in the American League. Closer Clay Holmes, who was named an All-Star for the second time in July, finished the year with 13 blown saves. Holmes' struggles even put the Yankees' World Series hopes at risk, considering no eventual champion has ever had a player blow double-digit saves in the regular season. At the trade deadline, it seemed apparent the Yankees needed a closer, with Clay Holmes struggling in the role for over a month.
