3/31/21 Cubs embarking on a season that could go in many different directions. In case anyone has forgotten, the Cubs lost their last six home games that year with fans inside the ballpark, blowing a shot at the postseason in Joe Maddon's final year and leading to some loud booing of Kimbrel, one of the chief culprits of the downfall. Kimbrel lost his job last year to Jeremy Jeffress but pitched well enough in middle relief the final month that manager David Ross announced at the start of camp he'd return as closer without having to compete for the role.

3/10/21 What the Washington Nationals will (or won't) miss without Jeremy Jeffress.... The intrigue surrounding why the Washington Nationals ultimately parted ways with relief pitcher Jeremy Jeffress is steadily growing. When I saw Jeffress tweet, “I’m not what they say I am, I’m what God says! I don’t deserve this false negativity!

3/08/21 Nats GM won't say why Jeffress was cut, but not for on-field. Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo declined to specify Monday why Jeremy Jeffress was released from a minor league contract by the team, saying only that he considered it an “employment issue” and acknowledging it was not related to the reliever’s baseball performance. We’re just going to stand by the statement I made yesterday.

3/07/21 Nats release Jeffress for unspecified 'personnel reasons'.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jeremy Jeffress was released by the Washington Nationals on Sunday for what general manager Mike Rizzo called unspecified “personnel reasons,” less than two weeks after the reliever agreed to terms on a minor league deal.

The team sent out a six-word tweet announcing the move.

Rizzo released a statement about the right-hander via a team spokesman that did not offer an explanation, saying only: “He was released for personnel reasons.”

The Washington Post first reported that the Nationals were parting ways with Jeffress, who was expected to add to a back end of a Nationals bullpen that already included Brad Hand, Daniel Hudson, Will Harris and Tanner Rainey.

The 33-year-old Jeffress was taken by Milwaukee in the first round pick of the 2006 amateur draft and has pitched for five teams over 11 years in the majors. He was an NL All-Star in 2018 for the Brewers.

Last season, Jeffress went 4-1 with a 1.54 ERA and eight saves in 10 chances for the Chicago Cubs.

More than a decade ago, Jeffress was suspended twice for violating the minor league drug treatment and prevention program. He has said he used marijuana to manage a severe case of anxiety and he was diagnosed with juvenile epilepsy in 2013.

1/19/21 Why haven't the Cubs signed this guy yet, Part 6: Jeremy Jeffress. Jeremy Jeffress had a fine year for the Cubs in 2020, posting a 1.54 ERA and 0.943 WHIP in 22 appearances. He filled in capably while Craig Kimbrel wasn’t saving games; Jeffress posted eight saves in 10 chances, and allowed runs in only three of the 22 outings. He’s 33 and likely would not be expensive, and the Cubs are apparently talking with him about a return: Now, while those numbers are good, Jeffress’ peripherals aren’t great.
