7/07/25 Padres' Ethan Salas Shockingly Named Top Player Expected to Be Traded at Deadline. Baseball executives believe San Diego Padres catching prospect Ethan Salas is one of the most likely top prospects to be traded before the 2025 deadline, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic. "A.J. Preller and the Padres are always looking to make a splash at the trade deadline and are never afraid to trade their top prospects," Bowden writes. "...I doubt the Padres will trade [Salas] unless they can get an All-Star major leaguer in return who could help them win during this key window for their roster."

6/16/25 Padres trade idea ships No. 2 prospect for immediate impacts. A postseason team three of the last five seasons, the Padres have one of the more talented rosters in baseball, but have not broken through for that marquee World Series or even pennant-winning campaign. This current iteration is another solid team, sitting at 39-31 and just three games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League West lead. San Diego should find itself in a comfortable position at this year's trade deadline and could look to bolster its roster in a win-now move. Jim Bowden of The Athletic listed the Padres' catching prospect, Ethan Salas, as a potential target for the Tampa Bay Rays.

San Diego Padres No. 2 prospect Ethan Salas is one of several potential targets The Athletic's Jim Bowden believes the Tampa Bay Rays should pursue before the trade deadline. Bowden says the Rays are in need of a catcher with some offensive capabilities, and it is showing in their performances so far this season.

5/17/25 When Will Padres' Ethan Salas Return From Significant Back Injury?. San Diego Padres president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller revealed catching prospect Ethan Salas has a stress reaction in his lower back, and will remain sidelined until July. The Padres' No. 2 prospect and No. 29 prospect in MLB landed on the injured list April 26, but has not played since April 17. The 18-year-old currently plays with Double-A San Antonio and is projected to reach the major leagues in 2027.

5/13/25 Padres Top Prospect Has Back Injury, Will Miss Significant Time. In a significant blow to the San Diego Padres' farm system, the team's top prospect is expected to miss a considerable portion of the season, likely returning at some point in July. Catcher Ethan Salas is dealing with a stress reaction in his lower back, which has kept him out since April 17, when he had to leave a game that day for a pinch runner due to the back pain he experienced. It was not until April 26 that he was placed on the injured list due to a lack of progress in his back rehabilitation at the Padres' complex in Arizona. Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller believes that the injury will not linger in the long term; rather, the real disappointment stems from his lack of playing time and, therefore, development time this season in Double-A.
