7/22/10Greinke (6-9) allowed two runs and struck out nine in eight strong innings, leading the Royals to a 5-2 win over the Blue Jays. He scattered six hits in the outing and did not walk a batter.
6/14/10Greinke (2-8, 3.94 ERA) struck out 12 batters in a five-hitter, ending a four-start skid and leading the Royals over the Reds, 7-3.
11/17/09Greinke deservedly won the American League Cy Young award today.
5/06/09Unless you have been living under a rock you have heard how well Zack Greinke has been pitching. On Tuesday he earned honors as AL pitcher of the Month after going 5-0 with a 0.50 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 36 innings. He followed it up with a complete game shutout on Monday. He has been by far the best pitcher in baseball on the young season. The Royals have a relatively easy schedule through the middle of June, so as unlikely as it is Greinke's stock may actually not have peaked. He should be active in all leagues but owners looking to trade him may want to give him 2-3 more starts.
4/15/08It's hard to believe the kid who two years ago almost left baseball due to a social anxiety disorder is 3-0 and leading one of the best feel good stories in the young 2008 season. Greinke continued his dominance yesterday throwing 107 pitches in a complete game win verse the Mariners. If he is available in your league, which he shouldn't be, he is a must add until he proves otherwise.
4/10/08Greinke tossed eight shutout innings against the NY Yankees yesterday and dropped his ERA below 1.00 on the young season while moving to 2-0. It is still early but Greinke has been able to locate his pitches well and is certainly worth a flier in deeper leagues as long as he is pitching well and the Royals are giving him run support.
7/31/07Greinke might see some save opportunites with the Royals trading Octavio Dotel to the Braves on Tuesday. Most save chances look to go to Joakim Soria who filled in admirably earlier in the year. Add Greinke in deep leagues desperate for saves.
6/04/07When Joakim Soria went on the DL it seemed Greinke might see some chances to save games when Octavio Dotel was unable to pitch on back-to-back days. The Royals haven't exactly been giving their bullpen many save opportunites and Soria is due back within the week so Greinke likely won't get the chance to close. He is still worth a spot in leagues that favor middle relievers.
4/17/07Greinke lasted just 2/3 of an inning on Monday, throwing 49 pitches. He walked three batters and exited after Ivan Rodriguez hit a Grand Slam off him in the first inning. He is only worthy of a roster spot in deep AL-only leagues and will have his ups and downs as the season progresses.
3/29/07Greinke will be the third starter for the Royals.
3/01/07If Greinke doesn't win a spot in the Royals' starting rotation, he is expected to go back to AAA rather than work out of the bullpen.
2/22/07Greinke reported no problems during his first bullpen session of the spring. "I’m feeling pretty good,” he said. “Last year was crazy, obviously. And it wasn’t just last year. That was building up for a long time."
10/04/06The team would like to use Greinke as a starter next year, but if they can't find a closer in the off-season, Greinke is a candidate for that role.
7/25/06Greinke gave up nine runs(eight earned) over 4 2/3 innings yesterday in AA and continues to struggle in his attempt to rejoin the Royals. He does not warrant a roster spot at this time.
6/22/06Greinke was optioned to AAA-Wichita. His minor league rehab assignment was set to expire today. His four rehab starts have been somewhat of a roller coaster ride and until he is able to string together quality starts he isn't worth a roster spot.
6/04/06Greinke pitched five strong innings for AAA-Wichita on Friday in his first appearance this season. He was limited to 65 pitches while he builds arm strength but the one time phenom is worth a roster spot in AL-only leagues that allow reserves. He could return to the majors by the end of June and his potential is limitless as long as his emotional problems have been solved.
5/24/06Greinke, in extended spring training, is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Thursday, he will be limited to 50 pitches. If all goes well Greinke could join the Royals sometime in late June. He is still a gamble but is worth a flier in AL-only leagues if he can regain his 2004 form.
3/13/06From the Kansas City Star, "...Zack Greinke is undergoing counseling from a sports psychologist ... as part of a treatment program for longstanding emotional issues." "Ive talked to him quite a bit," manager Buddy Bell said. "He seems to be doing better, but I dont have any expectations on when hes coming back. Hes dealing with it as best he can. I hear a little energy in his voice."
3/09/06Greinke (emotional stress) is currently at home in Florida and will not return to the Royals for another 2-3 weeks. This means he will not be ready by opening day and will invariably remain in extended spring training when he does return instead of immediately joining the Royals rotation. Greinke still has enormous potential but owners should prepare themselves for continued growing pains. Advice let someone else deal with the headache.
2/27/06Greinke left the Royals camp on Sunday, returning home to Orlando, Florida to attend to personal matters. His return is uncertain. With stiff competition already an issue, any prolonged absence will ultimately hurt Greinkes chances of making the Royals rotation.
2/21/06The Royals have not made a commitment to Greinke as part of the starting rotation for 2006. Don't read too much into this; it looks more motivational than anything else. Greinke has probably the greatest potential out of anyone on the Royals staff. New pitching coach Bob McClure is looking for a renewed focus after the disappointing 2005 season.
12/27/05From rotoworld.com, "... had a brutal 2005 season, going 5-17 with a 5.80 ERA while giving up a ghastly 233 hits in 183 innings. So why is he on this list? Well, hes 22 years old, had a solid rookie season in 2004, and had a good minor-league track record. Hes going to need some help from the Royals and his coaches to turn things around, but dont give up on a guy this promising just because of a bad age-21 season."
4/12/05Zack Greinke reported having no difficulties delivering all of his pitches in his between-starts workout.
8/06/04Greinke had his most impressive start this season allowing just 3 hits and one run over seven innings while striking out 6. He has won his last two starts and improved his record to 4-8 on the year. He still may fall victim to poor run support playing in Kansas City but he is a premier keeper in all formats.
7/16/04After going 0-5 in his last five starts, Greinke finally picked up a win as the Royals won 3-1 over the Twins on Thursday. Greinke is 2-6 on the year and will struggle to get run support in Kansas City but he is an excellent keeper and won't disappoint in the ERA or WHIP categories.
5/20/04Greinke is scheduled to start on Saturday verse Oakland's Barry Zito. He has pitched well at AAA compiling a 2.51 ERA over 28 1/3 innings but you may want to temper expectations until he is able to pitch a few games in the majors. Greinke is still probably more valuable in keeper league formats.
3/31/04Kansas City reassigned Greinke to AAA-Omaha, there is a good chance he will be called up around the All-Star break so keep him high on your sleeper lists.
3/08/04Greinke pitched a scoreless inning and two thirds on Sunday verse the Colorado Rockies in his first action against major league hitters. He allowed three hits, all singles and recorded three strikeouts. Even with the solid performance he is a lonshot to make the team out of spring training but will join the Royals at some point during the 2004 season.
2/23/04Greinke is 20 years and has the stigma of being the best right handed pitching prospect in the game. He should continue to impress as he did at single and double A ball last season but he should ultimately start the 2004 season in the minors. He is a shoe in for an August/September callup and could even get a call around the All-Star break. He is an excellent addition to any keeper league.
1/17/04Greinke is the best pitching prospect in the game according to Kevin Wheeler of The Sporting News. He compares Greinke to Greg Maddux with a better fastball.
12/19/03From Joe Barbieri at MinorLeagueBaseball, "Greinke won each of his first nine professional decisions en route to a 14-4 mark in 2003. After going 11-1 with a 1.14 ERA to ultimately win Carolina League Pitcher of the Year honors, the 6-2, 190-pounder went 4-3 with a 3.23 ERA over nine starts in the Class AA Texas League. Take away one bad start ... he was 4-2 with a 2.01 ERA in the Class AA ranks ... overmatches hitters with his mid-90s fastball, breaking ball and changeup. Perhaps most impressive, however, are his poise and control. Demonstrating an advanced feel for pitching, the now 20-year-old Greinke issued just 18 walks in 140 innings last season and held the opposition to a .221 average."
11/06/03Greinke has been invited to spring training camp by the Royals as a non-roster player. He was the organization's minor-league pitcher of the year in 2003.
