3/17/05The Blue Jays released Billy Koch.
1/10/05Koch was signed as a free agent by Toronto. There has been no word or whether Koch will be the closer for the Blue Jays.
10/19/04The Marlins have released Billy Koch.
6/17/04The Florida Marlins acquired Billy Koch along with cash tonight from the Chicago White Sox for Wilson Valdez.
6/14/04Despite a save Saturday, Takatsu hasn't secured the closing job. "(Billy) Koch and (Damaso) Marte, they can get the chance — that's why I don't want to make Shingo the closer," said manager Guillen. "I'm going to go by my gut feeling. Whoever is throwing the ball better is the one who's going to be there."
6/09/04Manager Guillen said Koch will go back to the closing role when he "gets back on track" and that may mean never.
6/04/04Koch blew a save Wednesday night in a 3-2, 10-inning loss.
5/19/04Koch came on in the ninth and struck out the side for a save. It was Koch's 18th save in a Sox uniform and only the fifth time among those 18 that he accomplished it with a perfect inning. He struck out Lou Merloni with a 95 MPH fastball to end the game. "That's the best I've seen Koch throw," Guillen said.
5/06/04After throwing 37 pitches in a monster 9th inning Monday—Koch allowed a hit, three walks and two runs in a 5-4 victory—he threw 22 pitches in Wednesday's ninth, just 10 of which were strikes. He even got a save.
4/18/04Koch was warming up in the bullpen during the ninth inning yesterday, it appears that manager Guillen chose to let Damaso Marte close the game and not because Koch had pitched the night before.
4/14/04Koch blew a save opportunity against the Royals. He gave up four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning, highlighted by a monster blast off the bat of Carlos Beltran.
4/01/04Not only has Koch given up seven runs in 11 innings, he has given up 11 hits and four walks. Last spring, Koch pitched 11 innings, giving up 11 hits and five walks. But allowed one run.
9/03/03The White Sox activated Koch from the DL today.
8/26/03Koch was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday to begin a minor league rehab assignment.
8/16/03Koch will throw on the side Saturday for the first time since he went on the disabled list. Manager Manuel said the team will then determine if Koch is ready to go on a rehab assignment or if he needs more treatment.
8/15/03The White Sox are confident that Koch isn't suffering from anything more serious than tendinitis in his pitching elbow. "I'm not the pitching coach or anything," trainer Herm Schneider said, "but Billy's just not his normal self mechanically right now. He's doing a lot of things to try to find himself, and his elbow is having to work overtime."
8/14/03The White Sox placed Koch on the 15-day disabled list because of soreness in his elbow. Koch who saved 44 games last season for Oakland, has allowed 11 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings over his previous 12 outings.
8/13/03The White Sox will place Koch on the disabled list today because of soreness in his pitching elbow.
8/10/03The high-strung Koch says his confidence is intact despite giving up 11 earned runs over his last 12 innings.
7/25/03White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said that he does not intend to use Koch in situations in which the club has a lead. Manuel did not set any kind of time frame for when his position might change.
7/17/03Without his trademark triple-digit fastball, Koch is using his curveball as his out pitch. The results haven't been pretty. Koch has given up runs in his last three outings, including a game-ending three-run homer to Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford.
7/13/03Koch appears to be bumped from his closing role with the White Sox for now after giving up runs in each of his last three outings. Tom Gordon probably has secured the primary role.
7/07/03How many times can Koch struggle and lose his job without actually losing his job? It's anyone's guess at this point as to which of the three players Manuel might turn to in the ninth.
7/06/03Manager Manuel admitted that he would have used Tom Gordon or Damaso Marte instead of Billy Koch to close if the situation presented itself on Saturday. "Our situation is such that whoever we think fits that night will be in [as the closer]," Manuel said. "There will be times when [Koch] will fit that particular bill."
12/03/02The White Sox acquired Koch along with two minor-leaguers to be named from Oakland today in exchange for Keith Foulke, Mark Johnson and minor-league pitcher Joe Valentine.
8/15/02Koch pitched a perfect ninth on Wed. earning his 30th save of the season. This is his 4th straight season with 30+ saves. Early in the year there was some concern that Koch was being overworked but he has looked good with 10 saves since the All-Star break.
7/05/02Koch pitched a perfect 9th with one strikeout to get the win running his record to 5-0.
6/10/02Koch has been seeing a lot of innings this year and is leading AL relievers in Ks, but he blew his 4th save Sun. Be cautious he may be getting overworked.
5/22/02Koch has not recorded a save since May 5 and has looked poor lately especially with the rest of the team struggling. In his last 5 outings covering six innings he has allowed 11 hits and 11 ER.
12/07/01The Athletics acquired Koch today in a trade with Toronto. Koch will be the Oakland closer now that Jason Isringhausen has left via free agency.
11/18/01The Blue Jays are considering moving Koch into the rotation or making him a setup man for Kelvim Escobar.
6/20/01Koch has been reinstated has the Toronto closer.
6/07/01Koch is tinkering with his delivery and may not be called upon in save situations until he gets himself straightened out.
4/20/01Kelvim Escobar may steal away a few save opportunities from Koch.
2000Koch owns a 100-mph fastball despite Tommy John surgery a few years back. On May 26, he was officially named the new closer of the Blue Jays. He should be a top closer in the AL for years to come.
