Detroit Tigers' Wenceel Pérez (46) is showered with sunflower seeds in the dugout after hitting a home run during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Chicago White Sox, Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Chicago. (AP Photo/Erin Hooley) AP By Evan Woodbery | ewoodber@mlive.com CHICAGO -- Wenceel Pérez is now the longest-tenured Detroit Tiger. That is the type of distinction that might have seemed more fitting for someone like Miguel Cabrera than a 25-year-old who debuted last year. But it is the truth. After former pitching prospect Matt Manning, drafted in 2016, was traded at the deadline , Pérez, who signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2016, moved to the top of the list. Latest Detroit

3/13/25 Miguel Cabrera sees big potential in young Tigers: 'They're men now'. Miguel Cabrera loved watching the Detroit Tigers' late-summer surge last year, but he chose to stay away from Comerica Park. “I wanted to go to Detroit, but I also told myself, 'No, I don't want to be like a dark cloud,'” Cabrera said Wednesday in a Spanish-language interview with El Extrabase. Cabrera, now a special assistant to Tigers president Scott Harris, is in Lakeland this week for his first on-field work with the club since retiring. “I really miss baseball, but I understand that I can't play anymore,” Cabrera said.

9/06/24 Tigers' future stars surprisingly named top two prospects in MLB by insider. Detroit Tigers fans haven't had much to get excited about over the past decade. Miguel Cabrera withered away into retirement. Javier Báez turned into one of the worst free-agent signings in Major League Baseball history. The Tigers are above .500 after the All-Star Break for the first time since 2016 this year, and now it looks like they could have some of the very best prospects in the sport.

8/21/24 Can Padres' Manny Machado Hit 500 Career Home Runs?. While a plethora of achievements are recognized in Major League Baseball, few records get more attention than career home run totals. Recently, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees hit his 300th home run, prompting many people, including Yankees teammate Juan Soto, to wonder if he could make it into the 500-home run club. In response, Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports released a ranking of 18 current players who have a chance of entering the exclusive club.

4/15/24 Don't Look Now, But The Detroit Tigers Just Might Be Contenders. MLB's two Central Divisions are actually among my favorites to watch on an annual basis. The Cubs and Cardinals over in the NL Central are the closest thing there is to “haves” in the flyover divisions. Now it wasn't all that along ago that the Tigers were the class of the AL Central, though the clubs led by Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, David Price, Magglio Ordonez, Max Scherzer, Victor Martinez and others never did quite win World Series rings.

4/05/24 Tigers banking on Javier Baez's defensive value as plate struggles continue. After the retirement of Miguel Cabrera, the most visible player on the Detroit Tigers roster, the one whose name is most recognized outside of Michigan, the one who once had “star” attached to his name is also the player who is struggling the most. Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is coming off a bad season and a bad spring. Over much of the last two years, Baez was capable of making jaw-dropping web gems in one moment and then tossing away an easy grounder in the next. This spring, manager A.J. Hinch said Baez has been locked in defensively, emphasizing the routine plays as much as the spectacular ones.
