8/21/25 'I'm living proof': How Lucas Erceg is using his sobriety journey to inspire others. The softball field at Boonville Correctional Center has two fences. Erceg, who over the past two seasons has established himself as one of the most reliable relief pitchers in baseball for the Kansas City Royals, had arrived at Boonville, a minimum security facility that houses more than 800 inmates, about an hour earlier. Erceg had found purpose and meaning on the baseball field, and it brought him here, about 90 minutes east of Kansas City, Missouri, on an off day.

5/31/25 Seattle Mariners DFA Former A's Reliever. Last summer, the Athletics made a trade with the Kansas City Royals, sending right-hander Lucas Erceg to the playoff contenders in exchange for righty Mason Barnett, outfielder Jared Dickey, and relief pitcher Will Klein. Klein had made his MLB debut with the Royals before the trade, and was added to the Oakland bullpen not too long after the deal, but he didn't stick around for long.

2/27/25 Royals $22 Million Free-Agent Acquisition Misses Spring Debut With Back Tightness. The Kansas City Royals have already had to wait a bit longer than they anticipated to see their new bullpen acquisition pitch in his new colors. The Royals signed free-agent reliever Carlos Estévez to a two-year, $22 million contract at the end of January, coming off an excellent season in which the 32-year-old put up a 2.45 ERA split between the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies. Estévez, who looks to be the front-runner for the closer role over incumbent Lucas Erceg, was supposed to make his Royals spring debut on Wednesday. On Thursday, Estévez explained that lingering back tightness was the reason for his absence, but emphasized that he was still throwing and expected to make his game debut soon.

1/30/25 Royals agree with RHP Carlos Estévez on 2-year, $22M deal, person familiar with deal tells AP. The Royals and reliever Carlos Estévez have agreed to a two-year, $22 million contract, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday night. The deal includes a $13 million option with a $2 million buyout, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending a physical. Kansas City will have to clear a spot for Estévez on the 40-man roster when that happens. He is expected to join Lucas Erceg in the back end of the Kansas City bullpen.

1/29/25 Sources: Royals boost bullpen with Estévez deal. Closer Carlos Estévez and the Kansas City Royals are in agreement on a two-year contract with a club option, sources told ESPN, adding a veteran reliever to a Royals team hoping to continue its run of success after a surprise postseason appearance last year. Estévez, 32, has spent the past two seasons as a closer -- first for the Los Angeles Angels and then, following a July trade, the Philadelphia Phillies -- with a high-octane fastball and a swing-and-miss slider and changeup. With a weak bullpen in the first half last season, Kansas City upgraded at the trade deadline by acquiring right-hander Lucas Erceg -- who became a dominant closer down the stretch -- and right-hander Hunter Harvey, who missed the postseason with injuries.

1/21/25 Royals Predicted To Acquire 20-HR Athletics Rising Star In Surprise Blockbuster. The Kansas City Royals lucked out when trading with the Athletics at last season's deadline. In former Athletics reliever Lucas Erceg, the Royals acquired the breakout star who would become their closer for the entire stretch run. After putting up a 2.88 ERA/1.17 FIP in 23 outings in Kansas City, Erceg looks to have the inside track on locking up his closer job permanently in 2025. The A's have since moved to Sacramento for the next three seasons, and have spent the most money in franchise history for a single offseason, in large part to avoid a potential grievance from the owners that would threaten their revenue-sharing status.

1/19/25 Royals Should Target $30 Million All-Star Closer For Bullpen Insurance. The Kansas City Royals have been busy this offseason, making some solid moves to boost their chances of returning to the postseason. Lucas Erceg and Hunter Harvey are a solid duo, but one more relief arm wouldn't hurt as they try to bounce back from their playoff exit. The Royals might want to give the right-hander a look.

12/10/24 Could Royals be after a 2-time All-Star for the back of the bullpen?. The Kansas City Royals traded for their apparent closer-of-the-future last season, but could the division contenders deal for another one? Kansas City pulled off a swap for then-Oakland Athletics reliever Lucas Erceg last season, then finished off a surprisingly successful campaign with him as closer. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal mused that Kansas City "could be in play" for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams.

12/02/24 Red Sox $13.5 Million Lockdown Reliever May Spurn Boston For Royals In Free Agency. The Kansas City Royals are once again having a productive offseason, but their work is not yet finished. Already, before most teams have made a single consequential move, the Royals have made two. If the Royals want to establish themselves as World Series contenders in 2025, however, there are still more holes to plug. Beyond closer Lucas Erceg, who is still relatively inexperienced in his role, the Royals have very little high-leverage depth.
