The Houston Astros have had so many injuries throughout the 2025 season that it's become tough even to keep track of who is currently on the IL and what injury they are dealing with. This trend has held particularly true for the Astros' starting rotation, as just about every starter on the roster has spent a considerable amount of time on the shelf for one reason or another. Lost among this long list of battered starters has been right-hander Luis Garcia, who has been sidelined for over two whole years at this point. The 2021 American League Rookie of the Year Award runner-up looked to be on track to become the next frontliner of the Astros' rotation, but Tommy John surgery in May of 2023 threw a wrench into those plans, and a number of subsequent setbacks have completely derailed them. The Washington Nationals had their first 11 batters reach base during a 10-run first inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. The Nationals scored nine runs before the D-backs could record an out, which is the second-most in the big leagues since 1961. The Boston Red Sox scored 10 runs before the Florida Marlins recorded an out in a game on June 27, 2003, according to Elias Sports. Luis Garcia hasn't taken the mound since the 2023 season after initially suffering an elbow injury that forced him to undergo Tommy John Surgery. There was hope he'd return early this season, however, the Houston Astros starting pitcher experienced a setback in April. The Houston Astros are shutting down right-hander Luis Garcia due to soreness in his surgically repaired elbow, manager Joe Espada said Thursday. The former 15-game winner had been scheduled to throw live batting practice Thursday but will instead undergo further evaluation in his latest setback since Tommy John surgery in May 2023.
